Blackwing Space Successfully Launches Baby Bird on Transporter-18 Rideshare Mission

Published: September 02, 2026 Topic: Press Release

NASHVILLE, Tenn., October 2, 2026 - Blackwing Space today announced the successful launch and deployment of Baby Bird aboard the Transporter-18 rideshare mission with SpaceX from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. SEOPS Space manifested and integrated the payload for the company.

Blackwing Space's Baby Bird mission is the company's inaugural orbital mission and the first flight of its Sparrow nanosatellite platform. The mission is designed to demonstrate Blackwing Space's ability to rapidly bring multiple commercial payloads to orbit on a standardized, modular nanosatellite platform while giving each customer a path to test or operate its own technology in space. Baby Bird carries payloads from Manifest Space, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, and Melagen Labs.

The mission's primary technology demonstration is Manifest Space's optical beacon payload, an independent system designed to provide a persistent, externally verifiable signal of a satellite's identity and position. Manifest Space began working with Blackwing Space while its payload was still a concept, progressing from spacecraft integration and testing to flight readiness in only five months. Once on orbit, Manifest Space plans to observe the beacon using ground-based telescopes and space-based observations as part of its effort to demonstrate a new approach to spacecraft identification supporting space traffic awareness.

Baby Bird also carries two secondary payloads: the 25th Celestis Memorial Spaceflight payload containing symbolic portions of the cremated remains or DNA of 56 participants, honoring their lives aboard a space mission, and Melagen Labs' MLC2 radiation-shielding material, designed to protect commercial off-the-shelf electronics operating in the space environment.

"Baby Bird brings multiple customer missions together on a single platform and demonstrates the broader model we are building at Blackwing Space," said Paul Anderson, Founder and CEO of Blackwing Space. "We are grateful to our customers and partners who helped carry this mission from concept through launch and deployment."

For Blackwing Space, Baby Bird is a demonstration of the company's broader model: providing the nanosatellite platform, payload integration, licensing, launch coordination, and mission operations support so customers can stay focused on their own payloads and objectives.

The mission establishes a repeatable foundation for future commercial, government, and technology-demonstration missions on Blackwing Space's standardized nanosatellite platforms while demonstrating a faster, more accessible path for customers to move their hardware and software from development to orbit.
