Nashville-based Nanosatellite Manufacturer Advancing the Space 3.0 Era through Affordable, Commercially Available Nanosatellites.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - December 9, 2025: Blackwing Space, a commercial nanosatellite manufacturer, has been selected to join the Space-Edge 2025-26 cohort, a national commercialization program helping innovators unlock new business opportunities enabled by space environments. Blackwing's approach reflects the shift toward a Space 3.0 ecosystem - one where access is affordable, commercially driven, and open to a broader range of innovators.  Blackwing will participate through Vanderbilt University, working alongside researchers and industry partners to advance breakthroughs in materials, biomanufacturing, and novel production methods enabled by microgravity.

Space-Edge is a national consortium developed in partnership with Arizona State University, Rice University, University of Central Florida, Vanderbilt University, and the Space Foundation. The program provides participating ventures with access to cross-sector expertise, mentorship, and a network of space industry resources to develop actionable strategies for leveraging space environments. Space-Edge brings together universities and space industry partners to help breakthrough innovations reach orbit faster, with this year's focus on advanced materials and manufacturing exploring how microgravity and vacuum conditions may unlock new properties in polymers, composites, semiconductors, biomedical materials, and energy systems.

Blackwing Space: A Commercial Platform for On-Orbit Discovery
Through Space-Edge, Blackwing will gain direct access to a pipeline of advanced materials and manufacturing innovations ready for on-orbit validation, positioning the company to become a preferred commercial platform for space-based R&D. The program will help Blackwing identify high-value mission opportunities and build partnerships with researchers and companies seeking to accelerate development timelines through space-based testing.

The company's commercial nanosatellite platforms - designed, built, and tested in Tennessee - provide an affordable and streamlined path for organizations seeking to evaluate materials, components, and production methods in space.

"We're building satellite platforms that support experimentation and applications in orbit," said Oliver Muoto, Co-Founder and COO of Blackwing Space. "Space-Edge provides direct access to expertise across the space sector, helping us understand how we can better serve organizations testing advanced materials and manufacturing processes in space - and allowing us to deliver on the promise of Space 3.0."

Program Partners and Mentors
The Space-Edge program operates in collaboration with leading organizations across the commercial space sector. Program partners and mentors include Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, Space Tango, Innovian Space, Boryung, G-Space, and Starlab. The Space Foundation serves as a key program partner, providing access to its global network and space industry expertise. Through the program, participants engage with technical advisors, business strategists, and industry practitioners to develop space-enabled strategies tailored to their specific innovations and market opportunities.
